Saturn from U.s.personally i've always liked to interpret the song as a commentary on men who are physically violent with their families and use religion as an excuse to be so, something you see a lot in the US, particularly in states with high populations of christian fundamentalists.AnonymousI just want to know is System of a down a christian band and is the song chop suey a Christian song.

The song is basically saying, "How can you judge someone for committing suicide resulting from extreme violent abuse when Jesus himself gave up his life for mankind in a similar situation?". So the only thing left after giving them their soul is death itself.

Even though they did everything in their power they could to gain favor, it wasn't enough hence "why have you forsaken me". This makes sense when it starts talking about "father into your hands I commend my spirit" where father doubles in meaning with the abuser/abused and Jesus/God. So, "I don't think you trust in my self-righteous suicide" is like saying, "Even though you doubt how far I will go to please you, I will absolutely kill whatever I am inside to make you happy". Self-righteous suicide is not necessarily death of the body, but putting to death their own soul, what makes them a person. Then switches to the abused person's point of view where they are expressing that they will do anything to make the abuser happy. Abusive quotes from the abuser telling the person who was abused to cover up the evidence of violence on their bodies with makeup and telling the abused person that they are "creating a fable" of any abuse in the first place since no one else knows about it. It paints a story beginning with the abuser's perspective. May it be accidental drug overdose, being in the wrong crowd, committing suicide to PLEASE an abusive "father", etc.

If I knew that some guy got away with the murder of their child because their kids death was considered a suicide, I'd be crying to! Crying out loud at the top of my lungs! "Why did you send your own son to die? He did everything for you! His self-sacrifice was for you, yet you judge him and not yourself?" The irony would be that the child did everything they could just to make the father happy, yet regardless how hard they try to please the father, they are forsaken. Craig from UsaMaybe a child with a good heart was brutally murdered by an abusive father, but the father got away with it because the death of the child was considered a suicide. So thanks you systems of the down for this gem. An over all even reading more about at an older age I understand even more so why I’ve loved this song all these years. All in all this song helped me feel seen. It’s like describing how I would kill myself on the inside to please others and I’d cry to god asking him to save me. Muvadragon from Somewhere On EarthI’ve always felt like I could relate to this song growing up.Not Serj Tankian from WarrenI don't know about you guys, but I think it's funny how apparently this song is touching on drug addiction, yet the next song on the album, "Bounce", literally is about doing drugs and talks about it in a somewhat "positive" way.It could be Family and definitely Friends. People leave you by the wayside like a piece of trash. They could have been a Great person with good intentions, but one way or another things happen. Which is terrible in my opinion, some people didn't have the Best Life because no one stepped in to stop them from the way they were living or the things they were doing. Luke 23:46 & Isaiah 49:14 Daron and Serj are right, People do indeed Judge you even After Death depending on the way someone passed. Cam from CtNo matter what people may think about some of the Songs Lyrics, I truly do appreciate the Bible references in the Song.AnonymousOk, so he wasn't ever singing "Father Deer Hands?".“Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ which is translated, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ ” (Mark 15:34 Matthew 27:46) it is is a direct quotation (by Jesus) from Psalm 22:1. Mike Geo from Ny“Why have you forsaken me”, like “father into your hands I commend my spirit”, is also a Jesus quote, separate from Isaiah.
